BIO

Robert Miklos has been a visitor and observer of Nantucket Island for over 40 years. He spends most of his weekends and summers at his restored Greek Revival house in the heart of the Historic District. The images he creates in his artwork are intended to capture a fleeting moment in time while connecting to Nantucket’s rich history and legacy.

In addition to the physical beauty of the island, Robert has been influenced by the artists of Nantucket, especially the work of John Austin, members of Nantucket’s Artist Colony, and his own collection of vintage postcards by photographer, Marshall Gardiner. His technique and point of view is informed by a range of American artists including watercolorists Edward Hopper and Andrew Wyeth, and precisionists Charles Sheeler and Charles Demuth. For his work in collage he takes inspiration from both Robert Rauschenberg and Romare Bearden.

He enjoys working outdoors in watercolor because of its immediacy, intensity and accidental quality. As he re-visits these scenes time and time again he is providing his own interpretation and perspective, recording the contemporary condition of the island.

Robert Miklos is a practicing architect in Boston and founder of designLAB architects.

ON PROCESS

For Robert Miklos the island of Nantucket, as small as it is, has provided unlimited subject matter for interpretation, with many scenes and places still to discover.

This Process section provides a few snapshots into Robert’s process of observation. He begins each work with an idea or methodology for the development of the image, but as the painting progresses  it takes on a life of its own. Drawing from his toolbox of techniques, each painting becomes an experiment in its own right, helping to inform a larger body of work and future investigations.
