EN PLEIN AIR

Since 2013, Miklos has participated every year in the now popular AAN’s Plein Air Festival held in late June. He enjoys working onsite, primarily in watercolor, because of it’s immediacy and accidental nature, while he attempts to paint a fleeting moment in time.

Miklos draws quickly in pencil on a watercolor block, then follows with washes establishing shadows first and details later. When painting outdoors, he is never without his vintage folding stool and cigar box fitted for sable brushes and tubes of watercolor.

During the 2015 Plein Air Festival, Robert experimented for the first time with a technique of combining photo images with his onsite watercolors. He often records his subject on an iPhone in case he needs to make detailed adjustments to the painting back in the studio. With Steamship Launch and Gas ‘n Ice he experimented with pasting iPhone photo images over the watercolors to see how close he came to matching color, texture and shadow in his painted observations.
